Maria and Little Chandler are very inadequate thereby not allowing themselves to achieve their full potential. This inadequacy is stressed throughout Clay and A Little Cloud and is emphasized by Maria’s and Little Chandler’s very childlike appearances and mannerisms. Yet, in describing the unbelievable "human brutality" he has witnessed, he describes the fighting of his 12 children (21). Hannetjie assumed Brille was accustomed to Hannetjie's oppressive behaviors, but ironically Brille was only now a victim of violence (21). He did not use politics to better his life, until he was imprisoned for only pretending to do so before (23). The family theme that I identified can be interpreted many different ways from the context that it was written, but these two short stories were appropriate for this theme. Frustration another prevailing theme in some of Joyce’s work has also been outlined in Araby. Everyday the boy would suffer with an infatuation with a girl he could never have. He even had to deal with his frustration of his self-serving uncle, which he and his aunt were afraid of. The absolute epitome of frustration comes from his uncle when he arrived late at home delaying the one chance of going to Araby. When the boy arrives at Araby to find .....

To Holden all children were innocent and he felt that he had to protect that innocence, therefore Holden could not face the reality that not all children were innocent and some would vandalize property; to Holden bad things only happened to adults. Some quotes are "This war you've started wage on, and make no cease; to Saragossa lead your host in the field, spend all your life, if need be, in the siege, revenge the men this villain made to bleed!" when talking about the Mu .....

The waiters kept a careful eye on the old man, as he has been known to leave without paying after too many drinks. As the two waiters monitor the old man, they younger waiter mentions that the old man tried to kill himself in the previous week. The older waiter asks why, and the younger tells him that he had no reason to kill himself because he had \"plenty of money.\" The older waiter lets the conversation drop after he hears this, because this statement shows the younger waiter\'s perspective. The older waiter seems to have empathy for the older .....
