It is to this final book that we turn our attention. If Book IV is read literally, with no knowledge of satire, it appears to be another bizarre journey of Gulliver, no more unusual than his other travels. However, upon further inspection, we see that Book IV criticizes the nature of man as a rational being (Crane, 402). .... Huxley has two novels that have the theme of utopia, and Island. , which was written before Island , has ideas that are quite far-fetched, but in Huxley’s eyes, still close to reality. Huxley’s first portrait of utopia involves having a controlled society of people all being alike. The year is A.F. 632 (After Ford; Ford is the equivalent to God in ) and with the available technology, citizens are mass produced. Island is a product of the rethinking of Huxley’s utopia. Although not blatantly obvious at first, Kenneth Slessor’s emotive and poignant poem Beach burial is a poem concerned with raising the awareness of national identity. Now I found this hard to believe at first – For me to be able to use this poem, (as it has been my one of my favourites for years) I though that for it to have ANYTHING to do with national identity I would have had to use my creative ability to dissect and warp aspects of the poem that COULD have something to do with national identity if the poet had actually CHOSEN to write about national identity. .... leadership, hope is obtainable for all those who live on the island. For example hope offers a reason for living and for doing their assigned duties. Through Ralph’s leadership he orders the building of a signal fire, for that day that they may be rescued. The idea of the fire enhances the capability of Ralph’s leadership skills and reasoning. This also ensures Ralph the confidence to be more then willing to face greater and more impossible challenges in the near future.
