“listener”) is the only boy who sees the truth. Roger (German for “spear”) represents the
worst that develops in people when there is no civilization to keep them in line. Roger
despises civilization and sees it as a hindrance to what he wants. Sam and Eric represent
loss of identity through fear of the beast. They slowly stop acting independently and begin
to act as one entity.
