Candide himself was flogged many times, Dr. Pangloss was made a beggar and then hung, the Baron went from a man of great standing to a slave, and Cunégonde was forced into slavery as well. Candide's search for freedom ends up getting him in a great deal of trouble everywhere he goes. From Lisbon to Cadiz to Eldorado to Surinam to Bordeaux to Portsmouth ....
