Karl Marx and Alexis de Tocqueville both lived in the time of the French Revolution. Yet they had drastically different views regarding their thoughts about the revolution, where society was headed, and whether or not certain aspects of the revolution were indeed good or bad for the people.

He stated, “the revolution made progress, forged ahead, not by its immediate tragicomic achievements, but on the contrary by the creation of a powerful, united counter-revolution, by the creation of an opponent in combat with whom, only, the party of overthrow ripened into a really revolutionary party” (Marx, 586). He did not think that the working class was truly united in its goals and tactics, and that is why the revolt was not as fruitful or long lasting as some had hoped.
